Key Points To Consider When Looking For Swim Lessons in Austin

When looking for swimming lessons in Austin, there are a few key points to consider before signing on the dotted line:

  1. Is the pool “safe?” Swimming indoors is a huge advantage as it allows protection from the elements (sun, rain, wind, cold), and minimizes the probability of class cancellations and/or delays. What does the water look like? You should always be able to see the bottom clearly. What are the student to teacher ratios? 4:1 and 3:1 are considered safe, but only if deck staff are present helping keep an eye on the lesson as well as the instructor in the water.
  2. Will your child be challenged enough? Look for a swimming lessons curriculum that moves your child ahead at their appropriate skill level, when they are ready to move ahead. Your time and money are valuable, no need to wait around until everyone catches on before they move anyone forward.
  3. Look for a short session, or a month to month option, and avoid the long term contracts. You have no idea how quickly your son/daughter will progress, and if a swim school wants you to commit to anything more than a month at a time, be wary. Of course your child may need some additional time to perfect their skills, but you want that choice to continue at your discretion, not the lesson provider’s.
  4. Observe the lessons by visiting the facility BEFORE signing up your child. Talk to the parents who are there. Have your child come with you when you are doing your due diligence. Is the facility a place where you would like your child to be a part of?
  5. Lastly, be sure YOU feel confident that the swim school you choose can teach your child how to swim and be safe in the water.

With spring fast approaching in the Austin area, it’s time to schedule those swim lessons.  Take some time to review these points and you’ll make the right decision for your and your child.
